Hi I'm Kate, I am a singer-songwriter/composer, performer, and music teacher.
I compose progressive-pop story-songs and illustrate them with music that fuses Celtic-folk, Classical, Electronic, Musical theatre and Progressive rock.
Inspired by Artists such as Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Björk, Paul Kelly, Claud-Michael Schoenberg, Debussy and Mike Oldfield.
I have written a large collection of songs that push the boundaries of pop.
I have been performing for over 20 years in corporate/cover acts and original bands. I have recorded 2 Albums and 3 EPs, created a series of original and corporate cabaret shows and produced a number of film clips. I began studying classical Piano and voice at an early age and later moved to contemporary/rock singing. Actively seeking training from multiple teachers my aim was to develop a voice that fuses pop and rock sounds with classical sounds. Using soaring highs mid-range belts and husky lows I aim to best express the full range of feelings in the songs I compose record and perform. Over the years I have been fortunate to perform across Australia and in some parts of Asia and the US to audiences from 20 to 20,000 people. Having signed and been released by 4 independent labels in the past 20 years I am now proud to be a fully independent artist.
Original Music

Whispers in the wind is an EP about the stories carried by the wind. It features a story about a historical Character and being alone. Kate recorded this in Brisbane with Producer Wernher Pramschuffer in 2006-2007 under the artist name Kahya.
Kate has created a series of tribute shows that each ran successful seasons in Melbourne’s iconic Butterfly Club, with one featuring at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Each show celebrates the work of a particular artist, theme, decade or genre. Current shows celebrate the work of artists Kate Bush and Tori Amos and the songs of Disney Princesses. Kate performs stripped-back piano arrangements, engaging audiences and inspiring singalongs and audience participation. With new tribute concepts constantly in the pipeline, a Kate Finkelstein show brings audiences back time and again for great music performed with style and exuberance.
These shows suit intimate venues such as cabaret clubs, small theatres and wineries.
With a vast array of popular songs at her fingertips Kate provides the music to enhance that special event. Or by adding pre-programmed loops and arpeggios Kate creates electro-synth-pop versions of popular songs to ramp up the energy.
Kate puts her own spin and authentic expression into the cover songs she plays. Special requests are welcome.
